Ziziphus mucronata, known as the buffalo thorn, is a species of tree in the family Rhamnaceae, native to southern Africa. It is deciduous and may grow up to 17 metres tall. Traditionally, the branches of these trees were used as a medium to transport the spirits of the departed from the gravesite or place of death to the home of the deceased. To accomplish this, a branch of an umlahlankosi tree (also known as an Mpafa or Buffalo Thorn [Ziziphus mucronata]) was used to sweep Shaka’s grave at the original kwaDukuza and then it was carried to the new site after being sprinkled with the gall of a sacrificial animal.
